Cleanings & Preventive Care

The appointment that protects everything else. Thorough, gentle, and never rushed to fit a schedule.

A professional cleaning removes the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing cannot reach, particularly below the gumline and between the teeth. Paired with a proper examination, it is the appointment that finds problems while they are still small and inexpensive to solve.

Your hygienist works through the mouth systematically, using ultrasonic and hand instruments to lift deposits, then polishes and finishes between the teeth. We assess your gum health as we go and record it, so changes over time are visible rather than guessed at. Dr. Amera then examines the teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues and explains what she finds while you can still see the images on screen.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and, in its early stages, is almost entirely painless. Regular cleaning is how it gets caught. Prevention also protects the cosmetic work you have invested in, because veneers and crowns are only as secure as the gums and bone holding them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Cleanings & Preventive Care.

Everyone, on a schedule suited to their mouth rather than a fixed rule. Patients with healthy gums typically come twice a year. Those with a history of gum disease, heavy staining, orthodontic appliances, diabetes, or a tendency to build tartar quickly benefit from more frequent visits, and we will tell you honestly which group you are in.

Calm, and gentler than most patients expect. If you have had uncomfortable cleanings before, say so at the start, because there is a great deal we can do about it, including topical or local anesthetic. Nobody here is racing a clock, and nervous patients tend to be the ones who notice that most.

A routine cleaning and examination appointment runs about an hour. If x-rays are due or there is substantial build-up to remove, allow a little longer. Where deeper cleaning is needed under the gums, that is usually planned as separate, focused appointments.

Cleanings maintain health; they do not reverse damage already done. If gum disease has progressed, a routine cleaning is not the correct treatment and we will recommend periodontal therapy instead. Preventive visits are covered in full or in large part by most dental insurance plans, and we will confirm your benefits before your visit.

You can eat and drink immediately. Gums may feel slightly tender and bleed a little for a day if there was inflammation, which is a sign of healing rather than harm. Teeth sometimes feel briefly more sensitive to cold once tartar is removed from around the necks of the teeth, and that settles within a few days.
