Professional whitening uses a controlled concentration of whitening gel to lift stain from within the tooth rather than polishing it off the surface. It is the single most cost-effective cosmetic treatment available, which is why it is often the first thing we suggest and sometimes the only thing a patient needs.
We start by checking that the discoloration will actually respond to whitening, because not all of it does. Custom trays are made from scans of your teeth so the gel sits exactly where it should and not on your gums, which is the usual source of irritation with over-the-counter kits. You then whiten at home over a short course, with us monitoring the shade and adjusting the strength if you are sensitive.
Teeth darken gradually with coffee, tea, red wine, and age, and because it happens slowly most people do not register it until they see an old photograph. Whitening reverses that. It also brightens the whole face in a way that patients consistently find out of proportion to what they spent.

Most patients reach their target shade within one to two weeks of home whitening. Results typically last a year or more depending on diet and habits, and because you keep your custom trays, topping up later costs only the gel.
Whitening lifts natural tooth structure only. Existing crowns, veneers, and white fillings will not change shade, which sometimes means cosmetic work needs replacing to match afterward. Gray staining from tetracycline or trauma responds poorly and may be better addressed with veneers. Any decay or gum inflammation is treated first.
There is no downtime. Some patients notice short-lived zings of cold sensitivity during the course, which stop once whitening finishes. For the first day or two after each session, avoid strongly colored food and drink while the enamel rehydrates, then return to normal habits.
