Composite Bonding

Chips, small gaps, and uneven edges, refined in a single visit. Tooth-colored resin sculpted by hand, with almost nothing taken away.

Composite bonding is tooth-colored resin, layered directly onto the tooth and sculpted by hand. It repairs chips, evens out worn edges, closes small gaps, and covers minor marks, usually with little or no reshaping of the natural tooth. Because it adds rather than removes, it is the most conservative way we have to change how a tooth looks.

We match the shade first, often layering more than one so the edge keeps the translucency of real enamel rather than looking flat. The surface is gently prepared, then the resin is applied, sculpted, and set with a curing light, one thin layer at a time. Finally we shape and polish it until it disappears into the teeth around it. Most cases are finished in one appointment, and many need no anesthetic at all.

Bonding is for the smile that is nearly there and needs refining rather than rebuilding: one chipped front tooth, a small gap, edges that have worn unevenly, a tooth slightly shorter or narrower than its neighbor. It is also how we finish other treatment, smoothing the edges once aligners or whitening have done their work. Done well, it simply looks like your tooth was always that shape.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Composite Bonding.

Patients with a chipped or cracked edge, small gaps between the front teeth, teeth slightly uneven in length or shape, a single discolored tooth, or edges worn down over time. It suits anyone who wants a visible improvement while keeping as much of their natural tooth as possible.

One visit, and you leave with the finished result. We agree on the shape and shade together before we begin, then build and sculpt the bonding while you are in the chair. Because little or no tooth structure is removed, many patients do not need numbing at all.

Usually thirty minutes to an hour per tooth, depending on how much shaping is involved, and several teeth can be done in the same appointment. If whitening is part of your plan, we whiten first. Bonding is matched to the shade of your teeth on the day and will not change color afterward.

Composite is not as strong or as stain-resistant as porcelain. Coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking will dull it over time, and biting nails, ice, or pens can chip it. With good care it lasts for years, and unlike porcelain it is easy to polish, repair, or refresh in a short visit. Purely cosmetic bonding is generally not covered by insurance.

There is no downtime. You can eat and drink normally as soon as you leave, though it is worth going easy on strongly colored food and drink for the first day or two. Your tongue may notice the new edge for a day before it feels like your own. We check it at your next visit and polish if anything needs it.
